“The use of video technology was all over the place at the 2026 World Cup and a major review is needed to clarify what FIFA is trying to achieve with it. A complete lack of clarity and consistency on what constituted the line for video assistant referee intervention dogged the tournament from its opening game, when the review team recommended a red card — one of three dismissals in that match between Mexico and South Africa.
