Long throws, long delays. Does something need to be done?

“Long throws are the hot new thing. Well, sort of. They are not really that new, and whether they are hot or not is a matter for debate. They are certainly a thing, though. According to Sky Sports, the average number of long throws into the opposition box in the Premier League this season has more than tripled: last term, there was an average of 1.52 per game. This season, with all the attendant small sample size caveats, itโ€™s 3.85. It is not the prettiest way of scoring a goal, but if you have a player who can deliver a threatening throw into the penalty area, and the statistics say it is more effective that way than a short throw followed by a standard build-up, then you cannot blame those who use it. …”
