According to Sky Sports, the average number of long throws into the opposition box in the Premier League this season has more than tripled: last term, there was an average of 1.52 per game. This season, with all the attendant small sample size caveats, itโs 3.85. It is not the prettiest way of scoring a goal, but if you have a player who can deliver a threatening throw into the penalty area, and the statistics say it is more effective that way than a short throw followed by a standard build-up, then you cannot blame those who use it. …”
